ExtremeLANKC held our Midwest LAN War events and had been fortunate to have major sponsors like Red Bull (MLW 2006), Time Warner (MLW 2007 & 2008), TRENDnet (MLW 2009) and Dark Artz Entertainment (MLW 2011 Spring) as Event Sponsors. ELKC was something that I had done in response to needing a local LAN party for our gaming community. Seeing that we had several "LAN groups" in our 4 state region, I wanted to do something to bring us all together to do an event that everyone would remember. So I got in touch with several LAN admins from various parts i.e. Wichita LAN Party, KCBeatdown, TigerLAN, and LAN Lordz, inviting them to participate in this LAN that I was putting together with Red Bull Energy Drinks in 2006. It was known as COOP 2006, ELKC 18.0 and tagged by myself as MLW 2006. We had over 225 people at this event that was held in NKC at The Cable Building. Besides tons of sponsor prizes that we collected we had sponsor areas with demo's, contests and prize giveaways. The night was centered around Battlefield 2 as Red Bull sponsored the tournament in which the top 8 teams were transported by chartered bus to a reconditioned missile silo for Titan II's that we had setup for the finals of the BF2 4v4. This portion of the event was known as Operation Topeka. We have had two other Midwest LAN War events with MLW 2007 being held at Union Station and MLW 2008 being held at the American Inn with Time Warner Kansas City being the Event Sponsor for these two events. MLW 2007 was a special event as it was held with Wichita LAN Party and it consisted of two semi-finals, one in Wichita and one in Kansas City. The Finals were held at Union Station of Kansas City and overall this event had over $3,000 in cash prizes and sponsor prizes. MLW 2008 was held with just ELKC as times were starting to get bad with the economy and several LAN groups were starting to board up shops. We managed to still sell out this event with over 125 participants and over $2,000 in prizes. MLW 2009 was held in our Olathe location which was sponsored by TrendNET and we had two nights of gaming with our smaller space limiting our attendance. This is when we started doing our Console and PC Nights on different nights to accommodate everyone. The cash prizes were good and we had trophies for everyone. Sponsor prizes were given out as well to just about everyone of our participants. We took a break from our regular LAN events in 2010 so that we could catch up on some much needed rest and regroup the way we did our events as the economy had sent most of our sponsors going into hibernation as well. Not saying that the gaming industry was to blame but we all know that they are not putting out games that offer dedicated servers like they used to. Without that feature it makes playing in a LAN format very tricky to play some of the new games being put out. So here we have had to work around that situation as well. Midwest LAN War 2011 was held in May of 2011 at the Finnigans Hall in North Kansas City. We had 80 plus at this event with both console and pc gamers in attendance. This was our first event with Dark Arts Entertainment as our Event Sponsor. They came in with all sorts of promo items to give away all during the event. Our two main tournaments were Call of Duty Black Ops and Bad Company 2. |
